Throughout foreign markets, demand for alternative solutions to traditional pesticides is growing, since synthetics are unable to effectively control harmful soil insects and have a negative effect on soil health over time. To address these constraints, Popoyán’s, a Guatemalan horticulture company, will significantly scale up production, marketing, and sale of beneficial insects and fungicides throughout Guatemala.
Outcome: As a result of the expansion of Popoyán’s biologicals products, more than 3,000 smallholder farmers will be trained in integrated pest management; more than 1,000 hectares of land will be under organic pest management in the western highlands; and demand for biologicals among smallholders will stimulate sales of $130,000 worth of products.
